Preserving Our Local Heritage

The Muswellbrook Shire Local and Family History Society is dedicated to capturing, preserving, and promoting the rich social and cultural heritage of the Muswellbrook area and the Upper Hunter region.

Located at the rear of the Muswellbrook Library, our research rooms contain a vast, unique archive of photographs, historical records, journals, and land databases. These valuable collections are open to members, local researchers, and family historians tracing their roots in the Upper Hunter district.

St Heliers Convict Register

This volume covers the 1830 and 1840 records of the convicts who arrived at St Heliers Station. When a new convict arrived his particulars were entered into this register. The particulars cover ship, sentence, date of arrival, native place, trade, year of birth, height, complexion, eyes and general remarks. The general remarks cover information not available elsewhere. Also included are details on hired servants. These details are not available elsewhere.
The book has the potential to provide so much new information about the convicts assigned to St Heliers, the attitude toward the convicts and how they responded.
The journal was transcribed by Mr Rob Tickle and the above words are taken from his introduction.
